Learning to Sew

How do I start sewing? I know nothing!

The “P” word… “Practice!”

For beginners, I have printable practice sheets available. Please print out the page of your choice from the links below. You may print as many pages as you need. No thread is required, just your sewing machine.

You can also use these practice sheets to practice hand sewing if you like.

Straight Stitching

This practice sheet helps you learn to sew straight lines. It is basic boxes or rectangles. Using this
practicing method also helps teach you how to pivot at a corner (needle down, lift presser foot,
turn, lower presser foot). You can sew on the practice sheet with or without thread in your
machine. Download PDF here – Straight Stitches

Curves

This practice sheet helps you learn to sew curves. It is a series of vertical wavy lines. You can
sew on the practice sheet with or without thread in your machine. Download PDF here – Curves

Circles & Ovals

This practice sheet helps you learn to sew around circle and ovals. You can sew on the practice
sheet with or without thread in your machine. Download PDF here – Circles & Ovals

Repeat this process until you are comfortable enough to try it with thread and fabric. Using a new
page each time will help show your improvements more accurately.

Print as many as you like. Most of all, have fun!

Sewing Basics – Getting started with your new sewing machine

Disclaimer/Caution: Be careful to keep your hands at a safe distance from the needle when you are sewing. A puncture can be extremely painful. Believe me, I know! Do not let young children use your sewing machine. My theory is that children should be able to reach the foot pedal before they are big enough or old enough to learn to sew. They should also have a full understanding between dangerous and safe things.
